The combination of a high school English essay assignment, a love of science and having an aunt who is a scientist led Ra鈥橬ya Malone to major in biochemistry at 石榴直播. She joined Carl Saint-Louis鈥 laboratory her first semester, she has co-authored a published paper in a prestigious journal, she spent summer 2023 in a National Science Foundation-sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates, and she has presented her research at 石榴直播鈥檚 Symposium of Student Scholars.

The brainchild of three 石榴直播 professors will introduce concepts of calculus into high school math earlier to help students be more successful when they get to college. The National Science Foundation awarded Kennesaw State a $2.5 million interdisciplinary grant for a project being called 鈥淐alculus for All.鈥 The thought behind it is relatively simple 鈥 if students are exposed to concepts of calculus in high school, they stand a better chance of passing calculus classes in college and can pursue STEM-related careers.

Over her first two decades of life, Maria Gonzalez has dealt with some major changes, the most significant being a 1,400-mile move with her family from Central America to northwest Georgia, where she learned English and adapted to a new culture. And, on Dec. 14, the 石榴直播 senior will proudly wear a cap and gown to be presented with the bachelor鈥檚 degree in civil engineering she earned from the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology.

With a slight scowl, Mary Tankersley solemnly stares at a rock wall at Stone Summit climbing gym in Kennesaw planning a route to the top, tracing the hand and footholds with their eyes. After a few minutes, Tankersley stands up, chalks their hands, claps off the excess and walks to the base of the wall, peering up. Soon, they defy gravity, climbing the wall swiftly by swinging gracefully from one colorful rock to the next. It鈥檚 easy to forget 鈥 for onlookers and Tankersley both 鈥 that the graduating 石榴直播 senior has only one leg.

Graduating 石榴直播 student Temi Aladegbemi said her career choice was inspired by what caught her eyes outside car windows while growing up. Kennesaw State was the first university Aladegbemi visited for a tour, and from the moment she arrived on the Marietta Campus, she knew her place was in the College of Architecture and Construction Management. A first-generation college student graduating on Dec. 12, Aladegbemi has been active in campus activities from her earliest days at 石榴直播.

As a teenager, Issa Sol铆s found a community in the world of theater. At 石榴直播, she connected with the concept of immersive storytelling, telling her own story and helping others tell theirs. Sol铆s will graduate this week with a bachelor鈥檚 in theatre and performance studies, as well as a slew of experiences in building community through theater.

Juggling school, extracurricular activities and earning spending money will be easier for students as a new phone application developed by a 石榴直播 alumnus allows them to focus on learning while earning gift cards for good grades. The app, Schoolconomy, was inspired by the personal experiences of 石榴直播 alumnus Regnault Drake Sanders, who didn鈥檛 have a job while attending Luella High School in Locust Grove, Ga. and saw during college how working negatively affected his classroom performance.

石榴直播鈥檚 Health Promotion and Wellness department has received a more than $27,000 grant to participate in the Georgia Young Adult Program (GYAP) of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS). This is the 17th consecutive year that the department in the Division of Student Affairs has received the grant.

Growing up the son of a lifelong public servant, Bert Wesley Huffman said a knack for knocking on doors, building relationships and raising money ran through his veins. But so, too, did providing a service to the community. After more than 15 years working in various fundraising and media jobs in the Atlanta area, a decade of which he spent at Georgia Public Broadcasting, Huffman was named CEO of GPB in August. The 石榴直播 alum said though he never could have imagined himself in the position years ago, he believes his passion for education, arts, media and service to the state of Georgia placed him exactly where he belonged.

Weeks after finishing his undergraduate degree in biology, Tyler Hill opened his email to a notice of a master鈥檚 degree program at 石榴直播 that would serve as a stepping stone to a doctoral degree. The email told him about the Peach State Bridges to the Doctorate Program at Kennesaw State. Hill鈥檚 success highlights the effectiveness of the Bridges program. Thanks to stories like Hill鈥檚, the program recently received a new five-year training grant renewal worth $2 million from the National Institutes of Health, with professors Melanie Griffin, Martin Hudson, and Kojo Mensa-Wilmot serving as co-principal investigators on the renewal.
