Issues of homelessness and food insecurity at forefront during annual event
Homelessness and food insecurity are on the rise among college-aged students, and ʯÁñÖ±²¥ will bring these issues to the forefront during its annual Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 2-9. Now in its 12th year, the weeklong event is organized by the University’s Campus Awareness, Resource and Empowerment (CARE) Services program, which serves Kennesaw State students experiencing homelessness, food insecurity or foster care.
ʯÁñÖ±²¥â€™s Homelessness Awareness Week features activities focused on increasing awareness of homelessness on campus and in the surrounding communities, reducing the stigma of individuals facing homelessness and providing for the hungry. This year’s events include:
Hoot Out Hunger
Saturday, Nov. 2, Fifth Third Bank Stadium, 2 p.m.
Be a part of the food drive competition between ʯÁñÖ±²¥ vs. Monmouth by bringing food
donations to the football game.
HAW Service Day
Monday, Nov. 4, Kennesaw Campus, Student Center, University Rooms, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Volunteers will sort and restock the campus food pantries with donations collected
from Hoot Out Hunger.
Mad Housers Competition: A Pathway to Affordable Housing
Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 11:30-1 p.m. in the Marietta Campus Architecture Jury Room
A competition where ʯÁñÖ±²¥ STEM and Arts students gain hands-on experience in design while increasing awareness of housing insecurity needs within the community.
Empty Bowls
Thursday, Nov. 7, Kennesaw Campus, University Rooms, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Empty Bowls is an international grassroots movement to bring awareness in the fight
to end hunger. Participants purchase a handmade ceramic bowl, made by the ʯÁñÖ±²¥ Mudslingers,
a student organization devoted to the creation of clay pottery. The lunch event will
feature a vegan soup prepared by University Dining.
Cobb County Homeless Vigil
Friday, Nov. 8, 7-8 p.m., Marietta Campus Globe
In conjunction with Cobb Collaborative, this candlelight memorial vigil will honor
those who have died in the past year in Cobb County while homeless.
HAW Sleep Out Challenge
Friday, Nov. 8, 8 p.m. - Saturday, Nov. 9, Marietta Campus Globe
The Sleep Out Challenge encourages students to spend a night on the Marietta Campus – in a simulated Red Cross shelter, in their cars or outside on the ground – to raise awareness for homelessness.
